Pet Hate

12 12 2012

I’ve always had a great love of the media, indeed I was a radio announcer for a while. When used well, the media, can be a powerful force for good.

But alas, these days, I’ve seen it used in the worst of ways.

I suppose there are a lot of reasons to hate old medias ways of reporting news, but here’s one of mine which really rubs me the wrong way, and it’s one of the things which you’ll hear often.

There’s some sort of terrible disease which we all know about, we may know someone who has it, or we might have it ourselves.

For the last twenty years or so, scientists all around the world have been looking at cells, watching what they do, treating them with particular chemicals, staying up late, giving up their time and energy in the hope that one day there may be a cure.

Then there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, after years of exhaustive research, maybe, just maybe there’s a cure within reach.

The media is informed, and how is the story reported?

“MEDICAL MIRACLE”

I absolutely hate this.

What this says is, let’s forget the students who spent years learning how to become doctors, surgeons, researchers, physicists, biologists etc, let’s forget that after they became any of those things, that they spent all those days and nights doing very difficult, and often tedious work… let’s just forget all that, and claim that God did it.

Let’s just suggest to the public that this potential cure just popped out of the sky, like “manna from heaven” because someone prayed a lot, and jesus waved his magic pinky, and that was that.

Have you ever watched credits at the end of a movie?

Imagine if in some strange land, they wiped all those names and all you’d see at the end of a film was “God did it”.

For all you know, thousands of people whose names you’ll never know, were involved in getting this possible cure to the point it’s at, and thousands more will improve and refine it for years to come.

That’s long hard hours of blood, sweat and tears.

Media needs to stop attributing hard work and dedication of so many truely wonderful people, to religion, it’s not in the least bit right, or fair.

Welcome to the Dark Ages, Part II.

11 10 2012

I saw this guy today.

He’s apparently the Science and Technology adviser to the Republican Party.

Apparently “Evolution is a lie from the pit of hell”

Are you voting Republican this year?

If they win, I’m going to be so very glad I live in Australia, but I will be very sad to think that a smart, tech savvy nation has sunk back into the dark ages.

Do you really want guys like this in power?

Why is an Australian so concerned about the US Elections?

5 10 2012

StoreThe guy following me on twitter asked me why I was so concerned about the US Elections, Why would it matter to an Australian?

Well, There’s a lot of reasons.

I’m concerned about the welfare of my friends who live there, I hope that they have access to good healthcare when they need it, and that they have access to Government assistance so they can keep their homes going in difficult times.

The tide is turning for Gay people as it has for black people and women, there may come a time soon where marriage equality is standard practice for everyone.

There are some who would give no rights to gay people, and hope they go to church more often, to “pray the gay away”, they want to pull us all back to the dark ages, while I would rather step proudly into the future.

That said, I don’t think we’re as helpful to minorities and women as we ought to be, equality for all is the only way, and any future leader should embrace this.

No government should come between who we love and our bodily functions.

I want someone who sees science as a wonderful thing which we can use to build a better world, and I’d rather there was more atheism in the mix, it’s time that religion was let go as a relic of the past. A leader who embraces these concepts would be well worth having.

Someone who sees Climate Change as a serious threat, and takes up arms against it, rather than against some foreign land, is definitely in our best interests.

Someone who understands that this is the only planet we have, is interested in keeping it clean and healthy, and someone who can guide businesses and individuals to do their bit in this regard, would be more than welcome.

I want to see a leader who talks with world leaders and really understands how the world and it’s people function, rather than start pointless and possibly illegal wars, Men should be home with their families, not in some far flung land, killing people they’ve never met, don’t you agree?

As an Internet user, I would also like to see Governments keep their hands off our Internet, the Internet should be a human right, it should never be weighted down under censorship, and it should never be blocked from anyone.

And I would really like to see our Prime Minister talking with someone who is sensible, someone who will honestly try to make things better, not only in the US, but around the World too.

Does that answer your question.

Political enigma

21 09 2012

There are two groups of people who I don’t understand, Women and Gays who vote Republican, and I think this equally applies to the Australian LNP.

I find the treatment of Women by both parties utterly appalling, as no government anywhere should have any power to tell a Woman what she should do with her own body, That is something which should remain completely up to her.

And Gay people, especially those who might want to marry at some stage. Denied all rights from the conservatives, who most likely hope they’ll go to church more often and “Pray away the Gay” rather than stand up for their own personal feelings, which are not doing any harm to anyone.

When I see either of these groups voting Republican, it’s rather like coming across someone banging their heads against a brick wall and complaining that it hurts.

Stop doing it?

Stop The Trolls

12 09 2012

A Troll can be someone who spews venom all over our internet, you know, like many mainstream media providers do today in their newspapers and television stations, some of which have called for a stop to trolling, how bloody ironic.

But it can also be a useful thing, in which people who troll, me for instance, can have a dig at something I dislike… Christianity, Bigotry, Right Wing Politics, Fat Mining Magnates and various arseholes of every sex and colour.

My Trolling is the positive form of the art, I’m not telling Women they’re sluts, or telling people they should shoot themselves as they’re worthless.

Trolling can also be called “freedom of speech”.

Does this newspaper which wants to stop trolling, merely want us to sit there and shut the fuck up, like the bad old days when most of us felt like hurling a brick through the boob tube, or telling a bloke on the radio that he’s a dickhead?

And HOW is this paper proposing to stop trolling anyway? Make us use real names, force us to have just one twitter account? Come around to our house and chop our fingers off, or put something in our computers which changes our tweets from “Tony Abbott is a dry parsnip” to “I LOVE JUSTIN BIEBER” ?

The whole reason I love the internet is that it’s a two way street, this interaction is brilliant, and I won’t be silenced by a few cretins.

A Good Christian

6 09 2012

Something came up on twitter about good christians, that is an oxymoron in my book.

Centuries ago, the religious would have burnt people like myself at the stake for saying God doesn’t exist, and I reckon they’d still try it on if it was legal… people are still killed and tortured for more progressive thoughts in some other countries even today.

As it is, they’re still trying to stop gay people from having a reasonable life, medical advances such as Stem Cell technology which may stop diseases such as cancer and parkinsons, and interfering in things which they have no business in holding back.

These are quite often the very same lot who deny climate change, but are perfectly happy thinking that burning bushes can talk, snakes can pervert women and a bloke can build a boat which holds over four million animals.

There is no “Good Christian”
