Going Backwards

18 03 2013

Australia may soon have a new right wing government, and I personally find that a very scary thought.

Strangely enough, We call them The Liberal Government, their name indicates a left wing government, but yes, they are right wing, because of this, I prefer to call them the LNP or Coalition.

While we vote for a party in Australia, most of us have a leader in mind when we vote, so in reality I think we do vote for a leader, even though they may not be on our ballot papers, when we think of the Labor Government, We think of Julia Gillard, and equally we think of Tony Abbott in opposition.

Tony has been, as is often the case with right wing governments, a bit cosy with New Limited, and it’s leader Rupert Murdoch. (as is the case with Fox News in the US which is owned by Rupert Murdoch).

Why is this a bad thing?

Imagine you own all the newspapers, some radio stations and some TV stations, and you have a lot of people reading your work, or watching it on television once they’re home, that gives you a lot of power.

For instance, if you had a friend who built houses, and you decided to tell everyone, via your media company, that your friend builds the best houses, and another bloke built poor houses, then without checking the facts a lot of your readers and viewers would believe you and go off and pay for your friend to build them a house.

Your friend would get really rich and maybe the other builder who may have even built better houses, could go broke.

And that’s the trouble with people, people believe stuff… it’s easier to believe stuff, rather than checking to see if it’s right, a lot of people say they have no time to check the facts, and often they don’t know how to.

This is why people buy particular smart phones, or vote for people, or go to church.

Belief is a fence, a handy device to keep the sheep all together in one paddock. when people believe in things, they’re far easier to control.

While it may be harder to spend time sorting out the facts, perhaps simply by reading, you could end up with a better product in the end.

A lot of people right now are being told, by News Limited, that everything Julia Gillard does is wrong, but Tony Abbott is Mr Perfect, which is a bit like saying Bohemian Rhapsody was never as good as Achy Breaky Heart.

And they’re quite happy to accept it as the truth.

But in a few months we may have a leader who doesn’t believe (so he says) in Climate Change, Thinks that we should keep mining Gas and Oil rather than look at alternatives like wind and solar, Thinks wireless internet will work just as well as fiber optic cable (as a techie I can tell you it won’t, nothing is faster than light), doesn’t seem to like migrants much, doesn’t like gays and lesbians.

If we are so easily conned, then the future will not be pretty.

Why humans will never pay much attention to climate change.

8 03 2013

During our walk tonight, I thought about people and how strange they are, and why they will probably never care much about climate change.

To most people, the thought of losing an eye is a dreadful thing, yet not many care about their ears… they will delight in listening to live bands or movies (I remember a time you could see a movie and not be deaf by the end of it) or their headphones at the highest volume for hours on end… and if they lose their sensitivity to sound or go deaf, they don’t care a jot.

Then there’s smoking. Despite all warnings for the past forty years, there still exist corporations which sell tobacco to people who delight in inhaling smoke for some strange reason, horrific stories about cancer and photos of growths and of dying people on packets don’t sway them, they will keep puffing earnestly until their lungs turn black and they die a horrible death.

Then of course there is alcohol, which if drunk in copious amounts makes people lose their sense of who they are and causes them to throw up into strange toilet bowls at clubs or what have you… or even on other people. This is reputably called “A good night out”

People will sometimes eat until they resemble a massive blob of fat, unable to move without a powered chair, and perhaps go beyond that point where they cannot get out of bed at all, all because of a crazy lust for food.

They will also consume sugar until they end up on a course of daily insulin injections.

And they will also delight in burning themselves to a crisp, lying half naked on a beach.

So just how likely are we, considering we’ve known about Climate Change since the 1970s, to stand up and do something?

I really don’t think that will ever happen.

People aren’t interested or motivated about the subject at all, despite the fact that it will kill us.

A post on Ninjas or Nyan Cats will receive a lot of love and comments, but generally when I post on Climate Change, dead silence, which I think is extremely sad for us.

Welcome to the Dark Ages, Part II.

11 10 2012

I saw this guy today.

He’s apparently the Science and Technology adviser to the Republican Party.

Apparently “Evolution is a lie from the pit of hell”

Are you voting Republican this year?

If they win, I’m going to be so very glad I live in Australia, but I will be very sad to think that a smart, tech savvy nation has sunk back into the dark ages.

Do you really want guys like this in power?

Why is an Australian so concerned about the US Elections?

5 10 2012

StoreThe guy following me on twitter asked me why I was so concerned about the US Elections, Why would it matter to an Australian?

Well, There’s a lot of reasons.

I’m concerned about the welfare of my friends who live there, I hope that they have access to good healthcare when they need it, and that they have access to Government assistance so they can keep their homes going in difficult times.

The tide is turning for Gay people as it has for black people and women, there may come a time soon where marriage equality is standard practice for everyone.

There are some who would give no rights to gay people, and hope they go to church more often, to “pray the gay away”, they want to pull us all back to the dark ages, while I would rather step proudly into the future.

That said, I don’t think we’re as helpful to minorities and women as we ought to be, equality for all is the only way, and any future leader should embrace this.

No government should come between who we love and our bodily functions.

I want someone who sees science as a wonderful thing which we can use to build a better world, and I’d rather there was more atheism in the mix, it’s time that religion was let go as a relic of the past. A leader who embraces these concepts would be well worth having.

Someone who sees Climate Change as a serious threat, and takes up arms against it, rather than against some foreign land, is definitely in our best interests.

Someone who understands that this is the only planet we have, is interested in keeping it clean and healthy, and someone who can guide businesses and individuals to do their bit in this regard, would be more than welcome.

I want to see a leader who talks with world leaders and really understands how the world and it’s people function, rather than start pointless and possibly illegal wars, Men should be home with their families, not in some far flung land, killing people they’ve never met, don’t you agree?

As an Internet user, I would also like to see Governments keep their hands off our Internet, the Internet should be a human right, it should never be weighted down under censorship, and it should never be blocked from anyone.

And I would really like to see our Prime Minister talking with someone who is sensible, someone who will honestly try to make things better, not only in the US, but around the World too.

Does that answer your question.

Political enigma

21 09 2012

There are two groups of people who I don’t understand, Women and Gays who vote Republican, and I think this equally applies to the Australian LNP.

I find the treatment of Women by both parties utterly appalling, as no government anywhere should have any power to tell a Woman what she should do with her own body, That is something which should remain completely up to her.

And Gay people, especially those who might want to marry at some stage. Denied all rights from the conservatives, who most likely hope they’ll go to church more often and “Pray away the Gay” rather than stand up for their own personal feelings, which are not doing any harm to anyone.

When I see either of these groups voting Republican, it’s rather like coming across someone banging their heads against a brick wall and complaining that it hurts.

Stop doing it?

Stop The Trolls

12 09 2012

A Troll can be someone who spews venom all over our internet, you know, like many mainstream media providers do today in their newspapers and television stations, some of which have called for a stop to trolling, how bloody ironic.

But it can also be a useful thing, in which people who troll, me for instance, can have a dig at something I dislike… Christianity, Bigotry, Right Wing Politics, Fat Mining Magnates and various arseholes of every sex and colour.

My Trolling is the positive form of the art, I’m not telling Women they’re sluts, or telling people they should shoot themselves as they’re worthless.

Trolling can also be called “freedom of speech”.

Does this newspaper which wants to stop trolling, merely want us to sit there and shut the fuck up, like the bad old days when most of us felt like hurling a brick through the boob tube, or telling a bloke on the radio that he’s a dickhead?

And HOW is this paper proposing to stop trolling anyway? Make us use real names, force us to have just one twitter account? Come around to our house and chop our fingers off, or put something in our computers which changes our tweets from “Tony Abbott is a dry parsnip” to “I LOVE JUSTIN BIEBER” ?

The whole reason I love the internet is that it’s a two way street, this interaction is brilliant, and I won’t be silenced by a few cretins.

QLD

23 06 2012

Watching the events in Queensland politics, I can’t help but wonder if the Australian Christian Lobby,┬áhas done more for Atheism in the last few weeks, than anyone in history.

Congratulations, You’ve made being a Christian about as attractive as a skunk in heat.

Nothing more needs to be said, I’ll just put my feet up and enjoy this bowl of popcorn, Cheers!
